In our pervious unit, we had learned how to use 3D modeling and animation applications like Maya, Z-Brush, Adobe Substances painter, and more to create and move 3D characters and environments. The Narrative project allowed students to put all of their newly acquired 3D animation knowledge together with previous knowledge of video and sound editing to create entertaining minute-long short films.

3D Character Model and Bio

However, before we were split into groups, students began our animation projects by creating original 3D characters. We modeled them roughly using geometric shapes in Maya, added finer details in Z-Brush, and gave them color and textures in Maya. Finally, we created backstories for our characters and added them to images rendered from Adobe Substance Painter.

You can view my character and read a bit about her by clicking on the image below:

Walk, Run, and Jump Cycles

After creating our 3D character models, it was time to animate them in Maya. After importing the characters into maya, we learned how to use keyframes to cut down on our animating workload. In maya, you don’t have to create every single frame of animation the way you would if you were animating a 2D animation by hand. If you set 2 different keyframes a couple frames apart, the computer will fill in the gaps between those 2 poses, making the animation between them almost instantly. For the most part this process results in a pretty smooth animation for very little effort, making it extremely useful in terms of saving time while animating. Another way 3D animation is different from 2D is that for 3D animation, the computer needs to “render” each frame. That means, if you want to eventually export your animation into a video, the computer first needs create and export an image (like a jpg or png) of each individual frame, which can take literal hours. That’s part of why time management was so important during our Narrative project.

Anyway, below is a video of some basic animations I created of my character using keyframes. I like the way my character, pip, looks in these movements, although I dislike that some of them are so jittery. I found it difficult to create smooth animation at times, for a couple reasons. The main reason being that, in Maya, you move character models using a skeleton rig that the 3D mesh is attached too. This rig has joints that can rotate in 3 directions, move in 3 directions, and theoretically scale in 3 directions. I only rotated or moved my joints on the X, Y, and Z, axes, but it was still a lot to keep track of. I think that some keyframes had the coordinates for these elements in the wrong places, leading to jittery animation. However, this taught me a valuable lesson for the future. The simpler the better! I now understood that adding to many keyframes and overcomplicating my animations can cause them to lose their smoothness.

Lip Sync

After learning to animate body parts, we learned to animate our character’s mouths. This allowed us to animate them speaking or singing to music. We first created 5 or more models with different mouth shapes, and them blended them together into one using Maya’s shape editor. This way, we could switch seamlessly between different shapes to animate keyframes of the lip sync animations. After choosing an audio and animating our mouth shapes to sync to it, students were challenged to add additional movement to our lip sync animations. Some students experimented with adding motion captured animations found in Maya’s mo-cap library, but I decided to give frame by frame another go. I made keyframes on my character’s skeleton rig to give the illusion that she was sitting at a desk and moving around, essentially leaning forward and back or startling in a way that matched the audio I had chosen. overall, I am pleased with the way my lip sync animation came out, and am glad that my second attempt at frame by frame animation in Maya wasn’t as jittery as my initial walk, run and jump cycles.

3D Senior Narrative Animated Short Film

Finally, it was time to get into groups and begin our 3D Senior Narrative Short films. I was partnered with my PM Senior animation peers Stella Cedar and Kajsa Hoffer. I honestly couldn’t have asked for better team members. In my opinion, we worked quite well together on this project and had a lot of fun in the process. Below, you can view pictures of my group and I on the day that we recorded the motion capture we were going to use for our film. (Be warned, there are some silly photos in there as well)

Motion capture is defined as “the process or technique of recording patterns of movement digitally, especially the recording of an actor’s movements for the purpose of animating a digital character in a movie or video game.” For our purposes, motion capture would provide as much of the frames of our animation’s movements as possible, cutting down the work we would have to do animating our characters ourselves. We put Kajsa in the Motion-capture suit, which would track his movements in the same locations that the joints would be in the skeleton rigs that we had been animating our 3D character models. In this way, we could record Kajsa acting out the movements our characters would make in the film, and then apply it to the 3D model later in Maya.

<figure class="wp-block-gallery For example, I created the following trash bags and bottles to go in and alleyway scene kajsa was creating. Stella helped me out quite a bit by adding color and texture to the objects I created.

Later, I created an office scene for the beginning of the film. It is visible in the photo below, although it currently has a transparency mode on so that you can see Kajsa’s character, Dakota, through the walls. Again, Stella helped color and texture the office scene, and taught me how to effectively add area lights to it. This illustrates one of the things I really appreciated about working with my group, which is that I could ask for help and learn new things from them. It was incredibly valuable to me to know that I had their support throughout the project, and felt rewarding to give my own back whenever I could.

Anyway, when we finished creating the environments, we were able to begin inputing our motion capture data to Maya and animating our characters within the settings we had created. Kajsa and I worked on the animating while Stella finished up texturing and later helped with sound effects. We spent hours upon hours rendering different scenes, until eventually we could import the jpg frames into Adobe After Effects as footage and finish the post-production of our film. We actually created a rough form of the final animation as a progress check about 2/3 of the way through our allotted time, which you can view below.

Creating the rough version of our narrative helped us picture that final product and better understand what we needed to do to fit all of our pieces together effectively. As of now, I hope to build a career for myself in the animation industry. In my junior year as a freestyle student, I wasn’t completely sure of what I wanted to do, but knowing now that I want to be an animator has completely changed how I look at my freestyle classes Senior year, especially animation. This narrative project gave me an opportunity to practice numerous skills that will be crucial to my future plans, but I think the most valuable one has been the opportunity to navigate collaboration on an animated film.

Working in teams is a staple of the film and animation industries, and consequently a skill I need to master. Working with Stella and Kajsa was made much easier because they are such talented amazing humans, but the project still pushed me to challenge my ability to communicate effectively in terms of setting deadlines and goals, splitting apart the workload, and in collectively deciding what our final vision would look like.
