Concept Statement

Near the beginning of the year, each student was assigned a specific statement made with randomized slips of paper describing a feeling and an action/experience. The slips of paper I received combined to make the statement of:

 

“Exploring the feeling of uncertainty through the experience of falling in love.”

 

I came up with a couple of ideas, and we were required to make a haiku and a free verse poem based on the statement. The Haiku then was paired with a photo we took of something that represented the poem, in my case it was my shoe split between a patch of healthy grass and dying grass. This was to represent the conflicting nature of uncertainty,  and being unsure or hesitant. I also attempted to make it appear balanced, by only taking a photo of one shoe. I debated taking a picture of two, but decided the solitude of one better represented the statement. And although it is not very easy to tell, I was on the my tiptoes, further representing a precarious balance between one or the other.

 

The statement was also the basis of my poem titled “Stumble”, where as a free verse poem, I experimented using various poetic techniques such as rhyming to shift the tone and portray the message. These poems and more are displayed and explained in greater detail on the Conceptual Webpage.
