This poem is from a third person perspective, from a college student. In his first year of college is when he first met Her. The subject of the poem is about “Her”, and her sudden disappearance during his third year of college. My original intent of the poem was to make this a story of how She, and the grief that follows after. However, that isn’t very interesting, and I think that disclosing the information of what happened to Her to myself is a lot more fun and mysterious. Not only does the reader or audience not know what happened to Her, the narrator himself doesn’t know either! In a normal relationship, a normal person would just move on, occasionally wondering where the significant other had went. But it is apparent that the narrator either did not have a typical relationship, or isn’t the typical male. He shows that their relationship meant a lot more than just love, which he showed by waiting for a long time, more than 10 years. I like to believe that his care and affection for this Her, who left him, gives the poem a feeling of nostalgia, whether this pertain specifically to a person or not. Although a lot of my imagery was not super figurative, this was not because I couldn’t make it figurative. My preference for a poem like this, where it is based on something that has happened in this world or could possibly happen, is that the depictions of an event use as many descriptive words as possible. For example, in lines 3-10:

“eyes piercingly gray as if she knew all

His problems and grievances,

hair as black

As the cutting dark of a midnight sky

and

lips as perfect as…

as lips can be…”

I also used some metaphors, like when the narrator is describing the outcome of a possible day when She eventually comes back, how she would knock on the door.

A line that I am proud of is when I used alliteration in line 23, the line going:

“Folks oddly ogling obligingly,

At this funky couple.”

I am experiencing the feeling of sadness, through the experience of losing somebody important.
