We learned how to use rigging, motion capture, and vertex animation to create stories. In the early part of the units, the character created during the Reflections unit was used to demonstrate the various animation types we were learning. Once we were finished with out introduction, we combined everything we had learned in the year so far to create the 3D Narrative Animation in small groups. This unit was concentrating in gaining comfortability with animating in the various methods and working with a team to make a short production.

Character Animation

Rigging a character and modeling them were very different things and if I had to redo the process, there are definitely changes I would make to how I did my character model back when I originally created it. Rigging was very fun because I got to actually see my model move. When we added in the Motion Capture elements, it became even more fun to see that movement become humanlike with different mannerisms and the inherent motion of humans. During the process, I found that even outside of class, I would be thinking about how I walked and what parts moved when I took a step. These original Character animation attempts were decent first attempts at 3D animation, but looking back after completing the 3D narrative project, there were definitely things that I could have improved or done better in.

Motion Capture

Motion Capture was a pretty fun side project. Once again, the way I modeled my character worked to my disadvantage, but I learned some workarounds to make it better. Motion capture was much faster than individually animating, but there was a lot of cleanup involved in order to make sure that the arms and hands didn’t clip into the rest of the body. I think there was still a lot I didn’t understand about the program yet when I created this, but it was a good early attempt.

3D Lip Sync

The lip sync project was pretty challenging, though slightly easier than doing it in 2D. It was fun finding audios, and this was the first time I learned how to move around the camera in 3D. There were definitely some limitations in my model for speaking that I wish I had planned for when I originally created the model, like making more defined lips/mouth. I was moderately happy with how it turned out in the end.

Narrative Animation

This was one of my favorite animation projects that I have done throughout both years of Freestyle. My group was awesome and it was so fun to work on this. When we were originally pitching the idea, we knew that there were certain limitations in what we could reasonably create as amateur 3D animators. We ended up creating a relatively simple story with more minimal animation, deciding to focus more on the environment. Drawing visual inspirations from games like Journey and Breathe of the Wild, we designed a slower, more explorative animation, than a more fast-paced plot focused one.

Going into this project, we knew it was pretty ambitious and would require a lot of outside research to create effects, especially in the realms of lighting and fog effects that we wanted to use. We also kept a pretty tight production schedule to make sure that we could actually finish it on time. In the end, this was by far my best 3D animation work of this year and I am so incredibly happy with how it turned out. Of course there are still parts that I would love to go through and fix, but by and large, this was awesome for me to watch as a finished product.

Reflection

This was definitely a development unit. It was amazing to see the growth from learning the basics of 3D to creating Remnant. I learned so much about Maya, ZBrush, and Substance Painter that I can only wish I knew earlier. There was a lot more understanding about the mechanics behind all of pieces instead of just knowing something would happen if I clicked a certain button. This unit was extremely helpful in figuring out what actually goes into all of the process of being a 3D animator and creator. The learning curve was admittedly pretty rough, but in the end, it was probably for the best.

Introduction This unit for animation, we were primarily focusing on 3D animation.
