Explorations

INTRODUCTION

This is our year end project, allowing us to explore whatever intrigues us and develop on that skill. I’ve always loved video games and the process in developing one. My dream job after art school has always been visual development. So, for my explorations project I challenged myself to create a concept and final design for a character, and to translate it into a 3D model in ZBrush.

PROCESS: Silhouettes

I first drew up these silhouettes to rough out the general shapes I want for the design. I wanted a character who was steadfast and cool-headed, yet dangerous, so I combined the triangular shapes of silhouette 4 and 6, with the sturdy body of 5.

PROCESS: Concept Iterations

Here I explored the actual design, and settled on the middle design to the bottom. A sort of lion/chimera knight.

PROCESS: ZBrush

This part was particularly challenging, learning a new program in the span of 2 weeks was hard, but gratifying. I will add more screenshots in the future.

FINAL PRODUCTION: WIP!

We created an infographic to inform others of what we have learned in the process.

REFLECTION

The explorations project was definitely my favorite project of my junior year at Freestyle, it allowed me to explore a program I was always very curious about. I’ve seen more than a dozen ZBrush speed-sculpts, and it’s nice to finally have some knowledge of how to do it myself.
