Artist Statement

Delta X is a story about an obsessive scientist whose life is filled with monotony. Thus my cover’s background consists of grey pens in white shirt pockets textured in a very repetitive way, representing all the uneventful days of the scientist’s life. To stand out on the bookshelf however, I used a bright green, off center pen to represents the one day in the story that turned his monotony on its head. I used Adobe Illustrator to make the all the graphics on the cover, including the shadow effects found on the pockets. Putting all the pictures and text in the right place was done in Adobe InDesign because of its impressive ability to easily position things precisely where you want them to be.

Reflection

The book jacket was a fun project to do and my first attempt at using illustrator for a project, which taught me a lot. Unfortunately, since I was using a new program my quality decreased making me not as proud of this art as I could be. After seeing other’s work though, I now understand what makes a good cover versus a bad one. It was time well spent on this project.
