Showcase

Introduction

Hi! My name is Emma Acedillo and I am a film student at Freestyle Academy. I joined Freestyle to express my creative side and learn more about film and other arts in general. I’ve had an interest in film because I wanted to be an editor, it’s actually the whole reason why I joined in the first place. Editing holds a special place in my heart, even though it can be very overwhelming and frustrating to deal with sometimes. But the process of making every edit always comes with a bunch of backstory behind a person’s creativity.

For my Showcase, I’ve chosen to present my Zenith project and my Senior Narrative. I chose both of these projects because I put a lot of effort into both of them equally throughout the year. I chose my Senior Narrative because of the skills that I’ve learned behind the scenes. As for my Zenith, I learned a lot about how I edit and learned more about the style and creativity between all of the effects that I’ve used.

I mainly wanted to expand my creativity between both of these projects, both different but yet similar in some ways. I overall learned a lot more about parts of film and about editing.

After high school I am attending San Jose State University as a Sociology major! I want to be associated with doing community organizing, social researching, data analysis and more.

Zenith

My advertisement for MVHS’s Slam Magazine!

For my Zenith Project, I was inspired to do an advertisement for the MVHS’s Slam Magazine! This process took around a month and has helped me grow in certain learning areas. The type of advertisement I wanted to do is a video advertisement for their magazine. I did this because I mainly joined Freestyle because I wanted to express my creative side towards video editing. I’ve been editing since I was in 4th grade and it’s something that has been a big part of my life. So I thought it would be a great idea to put my passion into this final project that we have here at Freestyle.

So I didn’t really know where to start on how to promote this magazine. I realized that I rarely saw any video magazine advertisements anywhere so I had to think this out on my own in a way. But I did use some inspiration from other advertisements that I’ve seen on TV and how they tried to make their product appealing to their target audience. I did this by looking at literal ads on Youtube and processing and noticing the details that they put in to make their product look good. As for artistic influences, I didn’t really have any. As I was making this advertisement I was doing this in my own style. I tried to make my style fit in with the aesthetic of the magazine and to make it simple in a way and not over exaggerate everything.

On another note, I did collaborate with one person who is part of the team for Slam Magazine, which was Miranda. She helped me reach out to the lead of the Slam Magazine team, Krissy Koh, a junior, very sweet person. And I found this to be extremely helpful because I needed images from their magazine digitally to include into my video advertisement. Krissy was able to send me SO much information about their magazine and images so I found that to be very helpful.

Senior Narrative

My final project for film

This is my senior narrative from my film class, filming this video took almost the whole year obviously. I was new to the use of cameras and breaking down how a story can go during pre-production. I’m a first year senior at Freestyle Academy so this was definitely a challenge for me.

When I came into film class in the beginning of the year, I remember barely having any friends or experience in film except for the knowledge of editing. I am now ending the year with being friends with everyone in my class and having a closer bond with most people in my classes. My growth throughout film has helped me grow more as a person, create connections and learn more about the depths of film.

Before film class, I never really thought about how movies were made, it surprised me that there were many steps behind the scenes for movies. How long it takes to film a specific scene, the necessities needed for the scene to be perfect, the lighting, everything. I am proud to put my all into the process of creating this short film and editing it too.
