In the Profile unit we were supposed to find an intriguing person and research the subject's influence on others. We gathered primary and secondary research sources and developed a distinct perspective on our subject’s life. In English we created a research paper that would later be turned into a magazine article in Design class using inDesign and Illustrator. Lastly, we created a website that includes information, photos, and a commercial of our profile star. The goal of this unit was to create a better understanding of a character-based and narrative style of journalism.

Head shot of Bob McFarlane

For my profile star i chose Bob McFarlane. Bob is a basketball coach, teacher, and father who runs an amazing summer camp during the summers called Bald Eagle. His passionate and intense personality has shaped him into who he is today, the kindest and most compassionate individual ever. I chose Bob because I believed he had a lot to tell about positive coaching and how it makes such a big impact in the daily lives of the younger generations.

At the end of this project i learned a lot. I learned more about good design principles and rule like C.R.A.P. and its meaning. I also learned how to create a magazine article that flowed. I broadened my coding abilities and dove deeper into the uses of Javascript. I also learned how to use After Effects to create a commercial. And finally in English I learned how to write a character-based and a narrative style of journalism. Overall, I had a lot of fun in this project and I’m looking forward to what Freestyle has to offer in the coming year.tg

The assignment in Design was to create a magazine article using the paper we wrote in English. We were supposed to transform this paper into something the reader could not only read but look at the design and images to grasp a better understanding into the subject's life and why they are important.

I decided to create a sports like article using the three colors white, crimson, and dark blue. these colors are the colors of Bob’s sports camp Bald Eagle. I chose this design because not only does Bob run a SPORTS camp but he is a basketball coach and P.E. teacher. All of these occupations give off a sporty vibe so I wanted to replicate a sports article for this very reason.

Interviews

Bob McFarlane

Bob McFarlane - Bob McFarlane is who I chose to do my profile project on. BNob is a PE and special ED teacher, a basketball coach, he runs a sports camp, and he is a father to 3 beautiful children. The first interview took place at his house, and the second one took place at his office at LAHS. The purpose of this interview was to get a better insight into his life/background/personal experiences.

Connor Allison

Connor Allison - Connor Allison is a soccer player and an employee at Bob’s sports camp Bald Eagle. Connor has worked there since the very beginning. The interview took place at his house in Mountain View, but the photos were taken in San Francisco at night in the misson district. I chose to interview Connor because he provided an insight into Bob’s coaching habits and how he runs his camp. Also allowing for personal experiences and interactions with Bob

Carter Paige

Carter Paige - Carter Paige is a 6th grader at St. Nicholas. Carter loves to play sports and go to Bob’s sports camp Bald Eagle. Carter is a returning camper at Bob’s camp, so that is why i chose him; to get the kids perspective of Bob, and how he interacts with the campers. I chose to do this interview at his home in Los Altos.
