Narrative Visual Perspective in Digital Media

For Digital Media, we created our own lightboxes.

A final look of the lightbox.

For this project, we started out by creating layer-by-layer sketches. We wanted to create a futuristic cityscape as if looking out from your apartment. We then created strokes in Illustrator, copying over our original sketches. After our final sketches were done, we printed out the layers with a laser cutter. Finally, we assembled our light box and added LED strips.

My inspiration for this project was the lofi girl on Youtube, as well as views from large cities. The lofi girl is an animated video of a girl sitting in front of a cityscape. I wanted to recreate something similar to this, as if looking out from an apartment, in a more futuristic theme, as well as a forced perspective, by separating skyscrapers into different layers. I also created “holes” in between the layers, for the light to pass through. Some challenges I encountered was the teamwork aspect, because it was difficult to split up the work, as we were using the same Illustrator file. We overcame this by splitting up the different layers and drawing each one. However, on the other hand, working together as a team was nice because when we would get stuck on a problem, we could work together to find a solution.

If I were to do this project again, I might choose a different theme including a sci-fi, or magic-based theme. It would be fun to experiment with more detailed layers. I would also change the layers, to allow for more light transmission. I am most proud of the perspective aspect of this project. I think the forced perspective, turned out really well in the back and looks realistic. I will be able to use the skills I learned from this project, to create further perspective-based art pieces, or create more multi-layer art projects. This project changed the way that I see others’ art because I have learned to appreciate it more. This project took a lot of work and commitment, and this made me realize how much professional artists do for their own work.
