Introduction
In the Exploration unit, Freestyle students explored our passions and improved our 21st century skills. We considered the idea, “How can you find, explore, and/or expand your passion?”. In my project, I explored music and technological skills. I tried my hand at film scoring, something new to me that I had never attempted before. The 21st century skill that I improved upon was Technological Literacy, the knowledge of what technology is and how to use it to achieve specific goals.
Process
In this project, I chose to research and create a film score. I watched videos and read articles about what film scoring is and the process behind it.
I researched famous film scorers and composers and listened to movie soundtracks.
I used a midi keyboard and recorded some piano that I thought fit the scene I chose to score. I did run into some trouble with pro tools but I eventually sorted it out.
Final Production
I chose to score the final scene of my narrative film. I tried to fit the mood of the scene.
Reflection
Throughout this project, I learned a lot more about the music of films and how it can affect audiences. I learned that there is more to film than just the camerawork and the editing. There are several parts to editing, including the music. I learned how to use technology better and I grew as a musician as well. I was able to put down the skills and present on this topic as well.
Experimental Music
Experimental music is also somewhat related to film scoring. Through this project, I utilized pro tools to create a piece of music with multiple instruments. I wanted to make the music a little bit mysterious, and the bells added to that.
Creating music digitally is very interesting and different from traditional music making. Less people are involved in the process, and it’s easier to test out different sounds and instruments. I tested out chords and instruments on pro tools and created something different than what I would have attempted otherwise.
