The idea that human burning of fossil fuels could increase the temperature of the earth was first proposed by Svante Arrhenius in 1896. This idea was generally seen as unrealistic, because of how vast the climate cycle was. Research on this topic grew over the years, and by the record-breaking hot summer of 1988, scientists and the public were ready to accept that climate change was happening. Soon after this, a board of scientists from around the world got together to warn people about how measures needed to be taken to slow down global warming. Unfortunately, not everybody was ready to do this. Corporations who opposed government regulation on things such as fossil fuels began to spend millions of dollars lobbying against climate change regulations and trying to convince the public that it wasn’t real. They even create fake scientific publications to stir up public doubt that climate change was actually a thing. In 2001, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) established the consensus that while it was hard to accurately model the climate, it was very likely that human civilization was going to face severe global warming.

This source is published in the Scientific American, a popular and highly credible American magazine. The Scientific American has been running for over 180 years, and scientists such as Alber Einstein and Nikola Tesla have contributed to it. The article itself is an excerpt from a book written by Spencer Weart. Weart received a PhD in Physics and Astrophysics in 1968. Up until his retirement, Weart was the director of the Center for History of Physics of the American Institute of Physics. During his time as director, he also taught courses at Johns Hopkins University and Princeton University.

In relation to my research question, this article gave me a wide timeline of information that related to my general topic, which allowed me to find new topics to look into further. For example, the mention of fake research published by corporations lead me to research the company Exxon Mobil, which provided lots of relevant information that helped me narrow my research question down further

In terms of my worldbuilding project, the information in this article informed me about the general timeline of huge scientific discoveries that endanger humanity. This will allow me and my group to better tell a realistic story about how the world will react to learning about something that may doom them. As mentioned previously, this article led me to a new topic that focused specifically on corporations, which is incredibly relevant to our world because of how one huge corporation is responsible for a lot of the danger humanity is facing.

Source #2 – Exxon Mobil Climate Research

Neela Banerjee, Lisa Song and David Hasemyer. “Exxon’s Own Research Confirmed Fossil Fuels’ Role in Global Warming Decades Ago.” Inside Climate News, 2 May 2024, insideclimatenews.org/news/16092015/exxons-own-research-confirmed-fossil-fuels-role-in-global-warming/.

“Exxon’s Own Research Confirmed Fossil Fuels’ Role in Global Warming Decades Ago” is an article that details a sort of scandal that the Exxon Mobil company was involved in, starting in the 70’s. In July of 1977, Exxon’s leaders received a report from a company scientist that confirmed carbon emissions from fossil fuels were causing global warming and could endanger humanity. The company got this information before the general public knew about these ideas. This scientist, James Black, gave an updated presentation the following year. His presentations reflected the general uncertainty scientists at the time held concerning the details of climate change. Soon after, Exxon launched an ambitious and rigorous research initiative. This research initiative continued for many years, and even encouraged the company to make good decisions. For example, they expressed concerns over a project to build a massive gas field in Indonesia, because of the massive amounts of carbon it would emit. This all changed in 1988, when a shocking New York Times headline sounded alarm bells for the general public concerning global warming and humanity’s future. In response to this, Exxon Mobil stopped their climate research and instead focused on pushing climate denial. The company founded and led the Global Climate Coalition, an alliance of the world’s largest companies working together to curb fossil fuel reduction initiatives.

This article is published in Inside Climate News, a nonprofit news organization that focuses on environmental journalism. It was founded in 2007, and received a Pulitzer prize in 2013. One of the article’s authors, Nella Banerjee, is currently the Chief Climate Editor for NPR.

This article gives me a very specific case that I can use to answer my research question. It provides a lot of details to answer my question from multiple perspectives

This article is very relevant to my worldbuilding project because it features a large corporation, similar to Exxon Mobil in some ways, that would probably be motivated to deny a crisis similar to global warming in the way that Exxon Mobil has. I.D.E.A. (The Institute for the Development of Energy Access) is a massive company and the main harvesters of the magical energy source in our world. Their actions are very destructive to the safety of the world, but they continue to pursue them because of the money and power they gain.

Source #3 – Beginnings of the EPA

“The Origins of EPA.” EPA, Environmental Protection Agency, www.epa.gov/history/origins-epa. Accessed 9 Dec. 2025.

This article is a short history of the EPA and some of its earliest actions. American conservation largely began in the 60s especially after Rachel Carson published her book, Silent Spring, in 1962. Disasters such as the Cuyahoga River catching on fire sparked public concern about air and water pollution. In 1970, Richard Nixon presented a 37-point message to the senate about the environment. Around the same time, he also created a council to consider how programs to support the environment should be designed and organized. This council recommended to the government the establishment of an Environmental Protection Agency. This organization would consolidate all of the environmental responsibilities of the federal government

This article is written by the EPA itself, which is a government organization. It lists all of its citations, many of which are historical documents. This article was also updated very recently, meaning its information is still currently accurate.

This article helps to answer my research question by explaining how the government in specific can take actions when faced with a crisis such as global warming

Finally, this article is relevant to my worldbuilding project because it shows how some sort of organization trying to protect the world from danger could be initially formed.

Source #4 – Early Environmentalism

Admin. “A Fierce Green Fire ~ Timeline of Environmental Movement and History.” PBS, Public Broadcasting Service, 27 Aug. 2025, www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmasters/a-fierce-green-fire-timeline-of-environmental-movement/2988/.

This article titled “Timeline of Environmental Movement and History” presents a timeline of numerous events in the history of environmentalism, adapted from American Earth by Tom Turner. The first conservation groups, focusing on protecting wildlife and wild lands, first emerged in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The first air pollution related action recorded in this timeline was the 1963 clean air act. In 1985, Joe Farman reported the hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica, and the Montreal Protocol was passed 2 years later to reduce the emissions that caused this hole. While not specifically relevant to climate change caused by carbon emissions, the Montreal Protocol is a very notable example of quick and international cooperation to solve an environmental crisis. The following year, 1988, became the hottest year on record in America. In response, NASA climatologist Dr. James Hanses stated that the greenhouse effect was starting to affect our planet. This moment in history was one of the first times that the public became aware and concerned about global warming. In 2009, the EPA ruled that 6 specific greenhouse gasses were a danger to the public and need to be reduced

This article is published in PBS, and adapted from writing by Tom Turner. Tom Turner is a senior editor at Earthjustice, a nonprofit environmental law firm. This law firm has been a key player in many important environmental cases in the U.S.

This source was one of the first ones I found, and it was very useful for giving me a starting point to answering my research question. It gave me a lot of potential events to look into, such as the record breaking hottest year, 1988.

In terms of my worldbuilding, this article gave me a realistic timeline that I could apply to any sort of environmental protection group that might be established in our world. This source, along with many others, has given me a solid starting point to decide that most of the public reaction to the crisis of our world will only begin in an event where everybody can observe the effects of it, such as the record breaking hot year.

</details>

Surreal Composition

For this project, we had to use Photoshop and the various skills we learned from creating funny compositions to recreate a scene from our worldbuilding project. Finally, I created the character.

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Artist Statement

I created this surreal composition in Adobe Photoshop to represent a scene from my group’s worldbuilding project. In our world, there is a magical energy source that exists on another plane. People have learned to create a hole in the separation between the two planes and siphon the energy out. The woman in this composition represents my character using one of these devices. She is a student learning magic, but really struggles with it. Overharvesting of this energy source by breaking the separation has actually been harming it greatly, and the border collapsing is pretty much inevitable. In my composition, I represented this with the large crack in the sky, revealing an otherworldly scene and releasing light. For my research, I looked into global warming caused by fossil fuel use, since it presents a similar danger to humanity.

To create this piece, I started with a photo of a valley and river. I masked out the sky in the photo and added a different photo of a night sky. I used adjustment layers to make the image darker, and add shadows on the mountains. The most complicated part was creating the cracked sky. I started by importing an image of cracked glass and using blending modes to incorporate it into the sky. Then, I cut out the shape of the center from both the glass image and the sky. Below this, I added an image of a colorful galaxy, that I adjusted a bit to make the colors brighter. The cracked sky involves many other layers, such a shadow layer to give the crack dimension. The woman standing near the corner is a masked out image of a woman taking a photo. I made the image darker to match the lighting and added some details to the phone to make it resemble my idea of the magic siphoning device. Finally, I used the polygonal lasso tool and a soft brush to create the beams of light.

</details>

Worldbuilding Pitch Video

After pitching our worldbuilding project to all of the seniors, we got about two weeks of time to revise our project according to feedback and implement everything into a short video version of our pitch.
