Phillip Rogers

For the profile unit, we were asked to find an exemplary person within our society and interview them to see who and what they’re all about. As for myself, I chose a tutor of mine, Phillip Rogers. I met Phillip six months before I started this project to get help raising my grades, and becoming a bit more motivated in school. After about a month I’d spent numerous hours there, around fifty to be exact. My parents weren’t really thrilled however to see the bill, and reasonably stated that I should probably limit my time there, or preferably not go at all. When I told this all the Phillip, he stated that since he saw I was motivated that he’d do the lessons for free. I thought this was very respectable because it’s very rare to find people who offer up their services for free. This is what made him such an exemplary and interesting person to interview, as he puts the importance of other people’s educations before his own income. In addition, the name for my magazine, essay, and central metaphor I used this entire unit came from his favorite sales pitch “We Beat Your Children so You Don’t Have To” and right off the bat, I can confirm that he does not beat kids at Goals. If you refer to my essay, this will be explained more in depth, yet I wouldn’t want to ruin the surprise.

For the design portion of this project, a much more sizeable piece of the pie was left for us to conquer here. To start off, we had to create a magazine, as well as a powerpoint which briefly summarized our essays we wrote in english, as well as flashcards which went along with the powerpoints and both were eventually used to present our projects in front of the class. While generally I’d consider Web Audio the class which ties everything together, in this unit it could go either way, as while most our material is on our websites, the presenting piece and mainly working up to that point took up a huge portion of time. Some issues I had in design mainly pertained to my magazine, and it’s awful color scheme. While I understand that orange and blue are complementary colors, they still look awful together. I really was at a loss for ideas on innovative graphics, but eventually Ms. P, our design teacher, interested me in the idea of using school supplies, which is why my background for the magazine was a piece of paper. After some heavy revisions to font, color schemes, and a suitable background were created, I felt like I had a much more professional project in the end. Now readying for the presentation itself was a walk in the park, yet presenting it was extremely nerve racking. I felt queasy before hand, yet the execution was significantly better than I was expecting, and I was happy with my results.

The English portion of this project was by far the easiest. This is due to the sole fact that I knew Phillip before starting this unit. For the English unit, we were asked to show why our profile star was important, what set the apart, them in action shown in two or three scenes, and what they hope to do next. Knowing Phillip made finding and creating scenes easy, as I’d spent quite a lot of time with him, and had a clear idea of what I wanted my scenes to be, thus I asked him for more specific details on a certain time, which allowed me to easily write my scenes. Also, as I wrote my final draft I developed my central metaphor, which again is explained in my paper. This gave me a very specific idea of what I wanted each scene to talk about, such as my first scene describing what the phrase “We Beat Your Children so You Don’t Have To” means, and splitting up its double meaning, again, he does not beat children, and that is not it’s other half. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it as I was very proud of my English paper.

The final and hardest portion was the web audio unit. In Web we were asked to create a fully functional website chock full of javascript animations which made our websites come more to life. Additionally, we were taught and asked to use a new program to us Web students at least known as After Effects, were we would create a presentation combining audio clips from our interviewees, a condensed version of our essay, and many photos. Since it was very hard for me to contact my profile star, it was almost impossible to get nearly enough photos for the project. I really was only able to get ten or so photos I actually liked, and looked decent. In addition, while I refined my dreamweaver skills some to what I knew last year, as well as my photoshop skills, javascript was insanely foreign to me, and I required a great deal of help to use it. In addition, it took a while for me to finish the After Effects presentation, long after it was due. If I could redo this unit, I would have used my time much more efficiently, as I definitely paid for it in the end. Luckily Mr. Florendo is kind and gives us time to do our projects after they were due.
