Salutations! My name is Josh Stukenborg, and I’m a film student at Freestyle Academy. I’ve now spent 2 years at Freestyle learning and mastering aspects of film, design, and writing. Outside of Freestyle and my other academic classes I like to spend my time drumming, playing video games, and hanging out with friends.

For the Senior Showcase project I am excited to share my Junior and Senior year narrative films. These films are my favorite, most polished products that I have made while here at Freestyle that I feel demonstrate my growth in Film. For the short film “Sticky,” I worked more on the pre-production, focusing on the writing and the scheduling of all of the shoots. I also worked a lot on the production framing, props, and filming the scenes. Working with my partner on “Sticky,” I really learned when to push for things that I wanted to put in and when to take a step back and compromise. For my second film, “Perekond,” I worked mainly on pre-production, directing during production, and post-production. I edited all of the indoor scenes and one of the outdoor scenes doing all the special effects with the boxer. I felt like I grew in my editing and special effects skills, and I’m really proud of how the two products turned out.

I would like some feedback focused on the viewing experience of the two films. Do the characters fit into the worlds we created? Were the endings satisfying, or were you left with questions? What parts were stronger, and which aspects were weaker?

I am excited to be majoring in computer science at Loyola Marymount University. I will also be pursuing drumming on the side, hoping to participate in independent marching groups in Southern California until I’m 22. While in Southern California, I also hope to continue my passion for creating films and videos.

Sticky

This was the film my partner Ben Peterson and I created our junior year of high school. We weren’t allowed to use dialogue and had to work on expressing our story solely through visuals and music. Ben and I both wanted to make a buddy love film so it made writing a lot easier because we both knew the story needed to be about the connection between the two main characters. This allowed both of our personalities to shine through in this film because we both agreed on what wanted and how we wanted the film to feel.

Perekond

This was the film my partner Owen Daniels and I created in our senior year of high school. This time we were allowed to use dialouge which really opened the door in the different stories we could tell. Owen and I really wanted to step outside of our comfort zone and make a film that wasn’t a comedy but that had a plot rooted in sadness and loneliness. This was a lot harder to write and direct than Sticky because both of us were outside of our comfort zones, and we had also never directed dialogue before.
