Documentary

The Documentary Unit is the largest project assigned at Freestyle, our challenge was to “creatively and truthfully portray a significant person, group, place, idea, or issue in the community” using narrative style Journalism, and gathering personal interviews in addition to secondary sources. The research paper for English would then be used as copy for our work in design.

This unit was also a particularly interesting challenge, due to the recent shelter-in-place order, forcing interviews to be conducted via email and Zoom, and making photography a bit more difficult as well as the challenge of not being able to work in class.

The topic I chose to cover was Urban Exploration. I chose the topic because I thought it was relatively unknown and thought it could be very unique, particularly from a visual perspective.

Design Production

The main product for this entire project was the 10-page magazine article produced in Design to display our English work, filled with original photography and our own illustrated graphic design elements.

Behind the scenes for one of my design elements

This project had us learning how to use InDesign for the first time, which is used to create professional magazines and books, allowing us to easily combine, organize, and arrange our copy text, processed photos, and illustrations very easily into a finalized product.

The cover page in Adobe Illustrator

Like our other productions, we used Adobe Illustrator to create all of the illustrations, making sure to keep within the specific Pantone color scheme we selected
