The goal of this project was to create a humor project using different humor techniques we ourselves enjoy and have done research on. We also studied satire in class through Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughter-House Five.

For my humor project, I collaborated with Nadia to create a cult and market it through a pamphlet we designed. The target of our satire were messages cults used to try and manipulate people into joining, as well as the tacky design of websites for real cults we researched. Our idea originally started as a poster, but we ended up creating a 6-page pamphlet which we distributed to the class during our presentation.

Before we started the design process with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, we drafted and completed a script, which included a list of all the assets we would need. We also created a rough draft for our logo, pictured on the page with the key symbol on the very right below, which incorporates elements of technology since that is the focus of our cult.

At first, Nadia and I wanted to do a recording but we decided a live performance would be better to really sell our cult to the audience. We presented Unplugged in a sort of sales pitch tone and used a lot of exaggerated manipulative language to draw the audience’s attention to it.

Overall, Nadia and I are both very satisfied with the end result and I feel very proud of our pamphlet design. I really enjoyed coming up with this idea and I definitely laughed a lot throughout developing it. I believe our last-minute decision to switch to a live presentation was worthwhile since we were able to hand out pamphlets to the class and interact with our audience better than if we chose to do a video.
