Welcome to my website! -Kevin Huang
Introduction

Hi! My name is Kevin Huang, and I am a senior at Mountain View High School and Freestyle Academy of Arts and Technology. At Mountain View High School, I learned with books, paper, and pencils just like every other kid in the world, but at Freestyle we learn to use the "tools of the future" which are quickly becoming the tools of today. At Freestyle Academy of Arts and Technology we learn how to communicate and learn like no where else, combining what we learn in English, Design, and Web/Audio to produce a bigger and better product.

This is where you can see all of the websites that I have created along with a little bit of detail on what can be found on the website.

Self-Portrait
The Self-Portrait unit was the very first project that I did at Freestyle. The website includes an essay about a pivotal time in my life, pages about my friends and family, and a diptych that represents who I am through metaphorical objects. The conceptual and artistic goals for this website were to capture my personality and who I am without just simply describing it with plain words. This unit definitely helped me learn and grow the most out of all the units because it was my first website, so almost everything I learned was brand new to me. The product that I am most proud of is my Self-Portrait Diptych because I spent a lot of time setting up the objects, taking the pictures, and editing them. I also think it was one of the better products that I produced during the unit.
Narrative 1
The narrative website was based on a story that we created in English class. Everything we did in the unit revolved around the story in some way. On the website you will find the animatic, animation, portrait, and illustration that I made during the unit. During this unit, I really wanted to capture the stereotypical dramatic life of the average teenager. For this project, I learned a lot about Adobe Illustrator and Toon Boom. I learned the very basics for the self-portrait illustration and tried to take it up a notch for the narrative illustration. I used Toon Boom for the first time during this unit and really learned how to create an animation.
Documentary
My Documentary project was based on the Mountain View High School Lacrosse Team. For this project, I interviewed a few of the coaches and players on the team. This project was definitely the most difficult project out of the four that I completed during my junior year because of all the different things that had to be done in order to make the documentary come together. One of my biggest goals for this unit was to make my website be fully functional and look well refined which I think I was able to do because it was during this unit that I really grasped the concepts of website designing. The product that I am most proud of is the book that I made in this unit. During the process of creating the book, I experienced a lot of frustration and annoyance but when the book was finally finished, it was worth it.
Conceptual
The Conceptual unit was the last project that I did during my junior year and also the most fun. Compared to the other three units, the Conceptual unit was the most free form. In English, we drew two sheets of paper from a hat and combined them to create our conceptual statement. This conceptual statement would be the theme for a lot of the products that we produced in the unit. I would not consider myself an excellent writer or remotely interested in poetry, but I found learning about poetry and writing poetry quite fascinating during this unit. I am most proud of the song that I produced during the unit especially because it took over 30 hours to produce. My goal for this unit was to create the best website that I had made thus far and I think I accomplished this as this website looks the most professional compared to the rest in my opinion.
Profile
In the profile unit, we were asked to choose someone that we found interesting and also contributes positively to a community. This project allowed me gain a deeper understanding of the journey people go through throughout their lives and how all their past choices led them to where they find themselves now. For English class, we conducted interviews with our profile star to learn about their lives so that we could write a profile article about them. For Design, we took pictures of the profile star and the article that was written in English and designed a magazine with it. Finally, in WebAudio, we took all the material that we created and designed a website to display the product and explain the creative process. During this unit, I have become a lot more comfortable with InDesign.
Narrative 2
For the Narrative 2 unit, we were told to write a short story so I decided to write a fictional story based on my lead character, Haraldo Magnusson. In the story, Haraldo is the current King of Norway after his brother was assassinated by his former best friend, Danny Devito, who has now been exiled to Kenya. The Magnusson and Devito family used to be the two ruling houses of Norway until the Great Civil War which resulted in the death of most of the Devito family and his life long exile to Kenya. When Danny escapes from Kenya and begin heading towards Norway, Haraldo sets up defenses across Norway to keep him out. The story follows Danny Devito's journey through Norway as he attempts to reach the royal city, Bodo. Along his path, he leaves a trail of blood and mystery. The story ends with a great revelation that leaves Haraldo questioning his life.
Innovator
For the innovator unit, I decided to partner up with Nolan Rudolph to produce a music album that experimented with multiple different genres. We made a total of 5 tracks each of different genre. This project was by the far the most exciting and satisfying project that I have completed here at Freestyle. This project really allowed me to go outside of my comfort zone in terms of music production and create something new. It also helped me with my collaboration skills because I usually work alone and I think I work better that way but having to collaborate on this project forced me to work and compromise which actually really improved what came out of the project. In English class, we had to write a research paper about a topic that related to the product that we would be creating for the innovator project so I decided to research the effects of music on physical and mental health. I learned a lot about how music can improve a person's life without them even realizing as well as the healing powers that it holds.
Portfolio
For the Portfolio Unit, we showcase two pieces of work that we are most proud of in from of one of our teachers, 2 professionals related to that field of work, and one guest of our choosing. For this project, I decided to use 2 songs; one that was used in my Innovator Project and another that I produced during the Innovator project but didn't end up using on the album. This project was useful to get professional criticism and feedback on the work that I have done at Freestyle so that I can know where I stand and how to move forward.
