Introduction
Senior Narrative is deemed the largest and hardest film project for Freestyle Film students. It is our second to last project at Freestyle and the most demanding. I worked with two other film students to create our short film, Hip To Be Square. In order to be successful with this project, we had to new film techniques, screenwriting, audio recording, how to work with real actors, and how to schedule a short film.
The Process
The process started with a pitch. I brainstormed and created an idea for a short narrative film and then presented it to the class. This showed us everyones ideas and who we may want to work with. We then formed groups and continued developing our ideas. We presented our final film idea (which changed while writing the screenplay and partly during production) in a film synopsis.
After some brainstorming, it was time to learn new film techniques! My favorite lesson was the lighting where we were introduced to different types of lights and different ways to light a scene in order to create moods.
We then wrote the script and created the shot list and schedule. We re-wrote our script countless times and continued to make adjustments to the shot list as we started production. The schedule was also adjusted several times as actors schedules changed.
