In English we wrote essays based off the things we believe in. In order to get started we first made a list of Thing I Have Learned in My Life So Far. The list that follows is mine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
We then took one of our beliefs and made it into an essay. We recorded ourselves reading the essay and used that audio to make an After Effects video. The video is on the Digital Media page. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This I Believe<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u00a0I work in customer service and before you go \u201cOof, that sucks\u201d or \u201cwhy?\u201d, allow me to say that I don\u2019t hate my job. I feel like it has become commonplace to have a grumpy customer service worker. Customer service itself is fine, most people are nice, however it\u2019s the select few who resort to verbal abuse that remind me that I\u2019m not responsible for carrying other people’s pain.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n I arrived here shortly after a string of interactions with several Karens, entitled middle-aged women who treat others like scum. But there was one woman in particular that really drove this belief home.<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n To set the scene it was a warm April afternoon and the store was teeming with people. We had four checkstands running when it\u2019s usually one or two. The woman approached the checkstand, her cart filled to the brim with items. She called down \u201cdouble bag for the ice cream only.\u201d I asked the checker, \u201cShe said double bag for the ice cream only, right?\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYeah that\u2019s what she said.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n About three fourths of the way through the process she asked me why I hadn\u2019t put the rest of the groceries in double bags. I told her, \u201cMa\u2019am you only asked for the ice cream to be double bagged.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cNo, I said I wanted everything double bagged.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cActually ma\u2019am,\u201d Vanessa interrupted, \u201cyou did say you only wanted the ice cream double bagged.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWell now I\u2019m saying I want everything double bagged. The bags always break because she makes them too heavy.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWell, we\u2019ve been going through a lot of different types of bags recently due to COVID\u201d I offered, \u201cthey aren\u2019t as strong as the regular ones, that might be why they\u2019re breaking.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cNo, I know it\u2019s not the bags, it\u2019s you. You\u2019re the worst bagger here.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Turning to Vanessa she continued to berate me as though I wasn\u2019t standing next to her.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cHonestly, why hasn\u2019t she been fired? How many other people\u2019s bags has she broken? Do you know how hard it is to have to explain to the customer that their seventy dollar wine has broken. As a result of what? Faulty bags? No, I know it\u2019s her, can we get the manager over here so that she can be fired now?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n As she continued complaining I choked back tears. It\u2019s not that I haven\u2019t been yelled at before, I have been,it\u2019s usually not super personal. We all have bad days, I get that, but don\u2019t take it out on me. I\u2019m just trying to do my job.<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n For all the hurt this woman caused me, I can\u2019t bring myself to be mad at her because that would be assuming her burden. I won\u2019t do that anymore.<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n This doesn\u2019t mean that I have a dearth of empathy, it doesn\u2019t mean I won\u2019t help you with your problem, I will. Ask any friend of mine and they\u2019ll tell you. And if I can\u2019t help I\u2019ll point you towards someone who will.
