ARTIST STATEMENT:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nFor this project, I took on the role of a recording engineer, assisting a vocalist in recording a medley of Phantom of the Opera songs. I chose to be Izelle Bhatnagar\u2019s recording engineer because her contact sheet mentioned that she specializes in piano and vocals. I really like ballads and other song types that use this combination, so I wanted to work with her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I feel that I had a lot of growth in my equipment handling technical skills. For one, this was the first time I\u2019d ever been in a recording studio, operating mixing consoles, speakers, and microphones that expensive. I learned how to prep instruments and other equipment for recording, and became well versed in Pro Tools\u2019 editing system. I also developed my communication skills by continuously checking in with Izelle throughout the process, asking her for her opinion on things, workshopping ideas, and always confirming if the system or her were ready\u2013to ensure the recording process went smoothly. One major challenge we had was that it was difficult to get a complete perfect take. Initially, Izelle sang and simultaneously played her own accompaniment on the piano. While she was able to do this well for the majority of the track, splitting focus between vocals and piano made it difficult to focus on and improve one or the other, especially during the more intricate parts. Courtesy of Mr. Florendo, we were able to bring on an experienced pianist named Fiona Lau to play live accompaniment and lessen the burden on Izelle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Looking back, I\u2019d spend a lot more time editing in Pro Tools. Specifically, I\u2019d be more meticulous about the EQ bands. While Izelle and Fiona did great, I feel like I didn\u2019t do enough on my end. There were some pitch issues that I should have tweaked. I probably could have also adjusted the reverb to be more apparent, and perhaps add a panning element on top of that to make the song feel more dynamic. Moving forward, I can probably apply some of the communication skills I developed over the course of this project. While I\u2019ll probably use them on a film set rather than a recording studio, the principle still applies. It\u2019s always good to talk and be on the same page with your collaborators, be open to new ideas, and vocalize and sort out any issues anyone might have.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
