The conceptual project at Freestyle Academy encourages creative endeavors through different forms of art, poetry, music, film, animation, and web production. By offering these options to students, we can express ourselves in many unique ways. Freestyle students are given access to DSLR Cameras, Tascam Recorders Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid Pro Tools, WordPress, and many more tools to help them succeed.

In the Conceptual Unit, I was able to learn and experience more than I ever would have thought I could at Freestyle. During this unit, I was able to create a plethora of new content thanks to the new skills I learned in Adobe Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Avid Pro Tools, and with my DSLR Camera. Being able to use all this new equipment was very overwhelming, but I also felt very grateful for being able to use new gadgets. I really enjoyed this unit because I was able to incorporate this knowledge and tools in all of our classes in order to learn and create new content.

Poetry

Almost as soon as we arrive to Freestyle, we immediately dive into poetry as the first form of English we study. In English, we began this unit by reading and analyzing different poems such as haikus, ekphrastic poems, and free verse poems. After learning about these types of poetry we were prompted to create our own. I personally wrote a haiku and an ekphrastic poem.

I ultimately decided to create content for my ekphrastic poem through text, images, audio, and video. Being able to create so much content for one piece of text has been incredibly interesting because I was able to learn new programs while creating relevant content that relates to assignments I have done in the past. I was able to produce parts of my ekphrastic poem, I felt that the whole thing was very rewarding in the end.

Photo Haiku Video

One of the first major assignments that we had in English was to write a haiku using a random conceptual statement. For example, I was assigned to write a haiku based on the statement, “I am experiencing the feeling of frustration through taking a risk.” In addition to creating the haiku, we also had to use a picture that correlated with our haiku. At around the same time as the haiku assignment, we were learning how to use Adobe Premiere Pro in Digital Media. Once we completely finished writing and presenting our haiku in English we were prompted to create a short video with our photo, haiku text, and recorded recitation of the poem.

Elements and Principles of Art

In Digital Media, we were asked to create a presentation about the 13 Elements and Principles of Art. We were assigned to include three different examples of each element or principle either a piece of art or a photograph.

I put my productions together mostly by utilizing Adobe Photoshop to create my pieces into a final piece. I did this by combining pictures or drawings we have made in Adobe Photoshop.

Conceptual Unit: Design

In Design, we were given Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, a DSLR Camera, and more to create fresh content surrounding the topic of design. During this unit, we took pictures or created pieces of art that were either related to the material in English or that were completely new concepts.

During the conceptual unit in Design, I valued being able to step outside of my comfort zone by participating in a class that I thought I was never really good at. In my opinion, I feel like I’m not the best visual artist, but by learning more about art and creating my own, I was able to become more accustomed to doing more artistic activities.
