Existence of a Higher Power

Stephen Hawking

Hi everyone! I’m your host, Mahika Gupta, and welcome to this week’s episode of Train of Thought. Today I have with me guest star Jerry Pierce. So tell me Jerry, would you consider yourself to be philosophically minded?

Alright! We’ll be starting off with a few discussion questions posted by our fans, right after a word from our sponsors.

Great! So let’s start off with a rather simple question: what are your religious beliefs?

I gotta say Jerry, it’s almost as if we were raised in the same family. So what are some of the things you believe factor into a person’s religious beliefs?

Okay, so now that we have established your religious beliefs, or lack thereof, would you say you believe in existentialism? The theory of existence before essence? That we have to create the purpose we crave in the world?

Do you think that one can be an existentialist while also believing in a higher power?

Okay, so now let’s venture down the path where philosophy meets physics: the creation of the universe, and the one man that has come closer to discovering the theory of everything than anyone else, the man, the myth, the legend, Stephen Hawking. He didn’t believe in any sort of God or any higher power. Not for even a second. Not even when his wife was a rather devout Christian. He believed in science, and he believed there was a way to explain the creation of the universe with physics. His success came out of buying 100% into what he was doing. Do you think it would be possible for someone like us who still has this idea of a higher power to truly understand his work?

Do you think that the creation of the universe can be explained solely with physics or will there always be that external factor, the higher power that we’ll consistently fail to understand?
