For mine, I chose to create a piece based off the passing of one of my classmates in middle school.

My Aboriginal piece is based on my spirit animal, zodiac sign, and aboriginal symbols. The story I wanted to show with all of these was the death of my classmate in 8th grade. The classmate was someone that I only briefly knew, but his death changed the way I viewed death. The crane was the spirit animal that I chose, which in asian culture symbolizes longevity and happiness. I incorporated my zodiac sign, virgo, and the constellation for it. The aboriginal symbols that I chose were clouds, water, and a traveling track. The reason why I picked clouds was because I wanted the crane to be flying away into the sky. I picked water because it symbolizes life. I picked a traveling track because I wanted it to represent his life and the road that he was on.

I created this piece in Photoshop using the brush tool to create the colored dots. I created outlines with lines and added dots on top with varying sizes. The biggest issue I ran into was figuring out the layout and how to incorporate the symbols naturally. The final layout I ended with is something I am super proud of. If I could do something different I might change my color scheme and experiment a little more with it.

Concert Poster

For our concert poster, we chose a music genre from a specific time period to make a poster for an artist. My poster is Ella Fitzgerald from the 1950s, an era where the end of World War II and the start of the Cold war was affecting people. For black people, this was also a time of civil rights and things like the Montgomery Bus Boycott. This was really a time where people were trying to move on from the tough times of war and onto a new era of the United States.

My music genre is Jazz and specifically the subgenre of bebop. Jazz is a music genre that originated from African-American communities in New Orleans, Louisiana with roots in blue and swing known for improvisation. Bebop Jazz is about freedom of expression and is characterized by a fast tempo and complex chord progressions. It was about breaking free from the typical style of jazz for dancing and creating something new.

After listening to music by Ella Fitzgerald I came up with a color scheme consisting of shades of orange, yellow, and a bright teal. This was what I felt encapsulated her music at the time. After creating the color scheme I drew inspiration from other jazz concert posters to get a feel for what they were like during this time. Using Illustrator, I took the very shape heavy aspects of the posters I looked at and created the base of my poster with a bold orange center and off white outline. I then added a color blocked piano in the background to add interest. A lot of old jazz posters use images of the artist so I added a photo of Ella Fitzgerald and expanded it so that I could add an orange color over the image. I learned how to create posters for a time period while incorporating my own twist on the style. The hardest part for me was keeping it true to the style I wanted to emulate. If I could change anything I would make slight adjustments to my colors or experiment more with font.

This is my moodboard, or images that I used as inspiration for the poster that fit the time period. It also has the color scheme that I ended up using for my final poster.

This was the final poster!

Product Design

For product design, we were able to choose a product and theming around that product that we wanted to create. The product label that I chose to create was for a chili oil brand, Mala Chili. For the logo design I thought about how I could incorporate Asian culture and themes into my visual choices. That’s why my logo included a tiger holding a chili inside of its mouth. I also chose a color scheme consisting of yellow and red, two colors that are both bright and poppy as well as integral to Asian culture. In my continued design of the label itself I also incorporated lanterns into the design to continue the theming. The first thing I did was sketch the design in Procreate before deciding on one and creating the final version in Adobe Illustrator. While creating the label all I had to do was add the logo and then add the additional information like nutrition facts and background graphics.

This was the first time I’ve created a logo before and it was interesting learning how to plan out a logo and label. Especially coming up with a unique graphic that is appealing to others was a hard process that involved multiple attempts to create. In the future I would like to try a different graphic style for the logo because this time I went with a more cartoony simplistic style for the logo, it’d be fun to try something new.

Moodboard

Logo

Label

Magazine Ad

Movie Poster

Sift is a sci-fi fantasy graphic novel about a group of unfulfilled young adults who form an unlikely alliance on their way to uncover the secrets of their society ravaged by a catastrophic nuclear disaster that left the population in various states of disability. In Sift, our characters, Taye, Silas, Ani, and Kyllen set off to discover the mysteries of their world and try to discover the secrets behind the spreading illness in their village. The specific setting I used for my movie poster was the cave full of crystals formed by the radiation of the nuclear disaster where the characters find themselves during the final act of our story.

I created my poster in Illustrator by first drawing out a sketch with the brush tool before creating the solid colors with the pen tool. I wanted to use a more simplistic and blocky color style for this piece so that there isn’t a lot of detail. That’s because I felt like if I added too many details it would get lost. Creating the cave shape was pretty simple, making layers of different shades of blue to create depth. After creating the cave I added in the crystals at the center of the piece for a little mystery. Then I created a border to the poster with the brush tool, before adding the title and tagline. Adding the text was the easier part and just figuring out where to place everything so that it didn’t cover anything important.

Reflection

The narrative unit in Design was one of our longer units, covering four different projects.
