The rule of thirds is when you divide a photo by a grid that is 3&#215;3 by drawing two vertical and two horizontal lines across it. Key subjects or elements of the photo are often placed at the intersecting lines of the grid. This can create balance and visual weight in a photo. In this photo a lot of the visual weight is on the bottom where the boats are. Additionally if were were to draw the grid lines we can see the intersections near the bottom are right on top of the two main boats in the image.
