Documentary project

For my Documentary Project, I wanted to learn about something visually appealing and something that I was passionate about. At freestyle Academy, we learned how to create a professional documentary by creating a research paper, a film, and a magazine to portray our documentary projects. I’ve always loved watching extreme sports, the insane youtube videos of mountain bikers sending it down mountains and I wanted to learn more about the sport of mountain biking. In the Bay Area, we have a huge community of mountain bikers that race competitively, and some who ride for fun I wanted to engage in that community and learn more about the sport. I found mountain biking as such a fascinating sport and I have always wanted to get into it more but I never had the time. I started to ride more and more during the quarantine as the trails are always open. Mountain biking has connected me to new people and a new passion.

Documentary Film

In film we learned how to conduct a documentary and an interview. Our first assignment of the documentary unit was to make a mockumentary using what we learned on how to conduct a documentary. we learned how to film an interview by using two cameras, one closeup, and one wide so that you can cut in between the close-up and wide shot when editing. For an interview, we also learned how to conduct an interview and we even did role-playing as interviewers and interviewees to hone our interviewing skills. We learned about the lighting, rule of thirds, and what background you need in order to create a professional documentary. We also learned how to edit a documentary by blending together answers to questions together. We took the skills we learned from our mockumentary to go on and start our documentary film.

Reflection

This documentary project was very for-filling for me, it gave me a new passion as now I mountain bike as much as I can to have fun and stay in shape during the quarantine. I met a lot of new people and a new community who is very passionate about what they do. I learned new film skills that I may very well use in life If I ever create a documentary. I learned how to write a research paper from english and how to create a photo gallery and a magazine article from digital media. I learned so much this documentary unit wether it was technically or mentally. I am proud with the work I put into this project, I would go mountain biking as much as I could and I always made sure to bring my camera or my go pro to capture exciting shots. I am happy with how much I learned about how to construct a documentary and about mountain biking.
