I would not include this piece in my personal museum because to me, it is severely lacking in substance. I feel that this sculpture’s execution is devoid of artistic passion and exploration. While I can appreciate the technical skill required to achieve such intricate balance, I struggle to find appeal in any other aspect of the piece. The thinness of the wires evokes a feeling of anxiety and fragility rather than tranquility, and the flatness of the leaves contributes to an overall dull atmosphere surrounding the sculpture. Furthermore, not only are the “branches” a dull grey color, but so are every last one of the leaves! To pull from such a breathtaking, vibrant source of inspiration like nature and produce an artwork entirely bereft of color is very disappointing to me. This piece does not feel like it has a unique voice, especially compared to many of Calder’s other colorful, dynamic works.
