To sum up all of my work at freestyle, I would like to share with you this portfolio page. I chose 3 of my proudest Freestyle Projects to display below. I hope you enjoy it!

Documentary Project

“How do you creatively and truthfully portray a significant person, group, place, idea, or issue in the community?”

For the Junior Documentary Project, students must portray an intriguing person, place, group, issue, or idea, by gathering primary and secondary research sources to develop a distinct perspective about their subject’s significance in the world or community. The research-based paper from English class serves as a copy for the magazine article in Design and a film, commercial, and website. This unit emphasizes narrative-style journalism.

For my project, I chose to interview local musicians/artists. My project was focused on fandom and how it’s important to protect it as a creative. I was able to learn a lot from my interviewees and apply their knowledge to my own musicianship. I took inspiration from the book: “Steal Like An Artist” by Austin Kleon.

This has easily been my favorite project so far. I valued being able to connect with local artists and research a topic that I was very interested in.

Humor Project

The humor project was a very fun unit, but also very challenging. I would watch comedians like Key and Peele, Payton King, and Life According to Jimmy for inspiration. I was very inspired by their videos that had a lack of structure and focus on improvisation and having fun. I translated this type of humor into my project and I hope you laugh.

Process and Production

In the beginning, I was very worried about this project. I started off thinking I was gonna do stand-up or a regular sketch, but when it got closer and closer to the deadline I knew that I needed to twist the concept a bit. Instead of running based on a strict script and idea, I went with the flow and came up with ideas as we filmed.

Production day was very chill and fun. We decided to shoot in the afternoon to capture the best possible lighting and energy. Instead of having a tripod or a camera person, we each took turns filming each other.

Reflection

This project can be very scary at first, but if you let your fear go and try to have fun with it, it will turn out great. I really like my final product and hope you guys do too!

Zenith Project

The Zenith project is a passion project. A project that lets us explore, combine, and find our interests through one final project that reflects everything we’ve learned here at Freestyle. With this project, my goal was to produce a beat-tape + cd-cover that reflects my new design foundation and my interest in music.

Inspiration

When creating my zenith project, I was inspired by multiple artists, words, and places. Artists like The Weeknd and Playboi Carti inspired my album cover, while Kanye west inspired the music. Words like Nostalgia, distortion, and shadows inspired the theme I was going for, a dark and gritty feeling. The desert, the nighttime, and my closet also inspired my album cover. My music evolved heavily over the course of the stay-at-home order, and I wanted to reflect that in my Zenith.

Process

As you click through the gallery, you’ll find that my process was all digital. I started out by making the four instrumentals. As I made all four, I spent most of my time on the beat called “Gone Camping” and it remains my favorite to this day. After making the instrumentals, I moved on to creating an album cover. This is where my design skills came in handy.
