Conceptual

Introduction:
The Conceptual Project is about finding different, often unconventional ways to express yourself. You need to take risks, explore new ideas and be authentically yourself. This project is also about learning how to use a lot of commonplace applications and tools that will be incredibly useful throughout your time in Digital Media.

SFMOMA ART REFLECTION VIDEO:
My first conceptual project at Freestyle started with a field trip to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. It was a great experience where I got to witness others who have implemented strange and unconventional means to express themselves. But what stood out to me at the SFMOMA was this colorful bridge on the second floor of the Museum, connecting two parts of the floor. I watched the sunlight come through the windows and hit the bridge in such a way that the colors seemed to explode from the rainbow walls. Even more breathtaking was the floor of the bridge; almost entirely transparent. I could see 20 feet below me the first floor of the museum, and all the people under there moving through the museum. I decided to do my Art Reflection Video about this very bridge. I wrote about the way it inspired me to slow down instead of moving through the museum as fast as possible. It got me to look down, take a deep breath and process what I was witnessing. The Art Reflection Video taught me about how to write about the way you interpret art and how that helps you come to appreciate it even more. Recording it also taught me a valuable lesson in recording and how you should never have your recording device too close to your mouth while you’re recording. I’ll let my Art Reflection Video speak in poor, muffled quality for itself.

Lining up the music in the background of this video was a fun challenge because I got to learn how to incorporate smooth audio transitions into my art and line it up with my talking.

PARODY INTRODUCTION:
My next assignment was to create a parody of a song. I chose “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana and I chose to do it about procrastinating homework.

The process of writing my parody song was first coming up with a song to use. Because of my affinity for punk and metal, I wanted to do something in that vein. But I also wanted it to be something fairly universal that people would recognize. Nirvana fit the bill perfectly. But what to write my song about? Procrastinating homework is both very relatable and hits incredibly close to home for me specifically.

Lyrics:

Load up on tasks

Bring your phone

Do something else

Instead of home(work)

Its band season

And I’m busy

And oh don’t make

me do this please

Oh no oh no oh no I’m so (stressed)

Oh no oh no oh no oh no

When I get home

I take a nap

Still have homework

Ain’t doin’ that

I’m not stupid

I’m just lazy

I don’t think that

makes me crazy!

An APES worksheet

Doin’ it wrong

Study for a quiz

Or write this song!

Hey!

Heeey
