Showcase

Hello! My name is Robyn Watson, and I am a Senior at Freestyle Academy studying English and Digital Media with a focus in Film. In my spare time, I enjoy doing graphic design work, taking photos, making short films, and hanging out with family and friends.

I decided to select the following two pieces for review: “A Blind Date” and “Heard”. “A Blind Date” was our Senior Narrative film, the lengthiest film I have ever written, shot, and edited. For this project, I worked with a partner, Hudson J., who mostly worked on camera. For this project specifically, I would like to receive feedback on the story/writing aspect of it because I had the initial idea and carried a little more of the pre-production work. I would also appreciate feedback on how well the actors performed, especially because I was directing. They are by no means professional actors, but I hope that my direction helped improve their performances. Overall, I would like to know what you enjoyed most about the film and what feedback you have for improving the experience of watching the film. I worked on “Heard” with a different partner, Nisha M. In contrast to “A Blind Date”, “Heard” is short and simple, with one location and only a few teen actors. This time, I took over the camera work and she directed. For this film, I would like to receive feedback on the shot types, the shot aesthetic, and how it was cut together. I had a vision for a longer dolly shot for part of the second act to pass time as a montage scene and would additionally like to know how you feel the dolly shot was integrated into the film and if it worked well.

This fall, I will be attending Brigham Young University. While I am currently undecided, I am planning on majoring/minoring in Film and Graphic Design. I’m not sure what I’d like to do after college in relation to a career, currently I’m content on building my skill sets for both industries.

Thank you,

Robyn Watson

“A Blind Date”

“A Blind Date” is the longest and most thorough project I have ever attempted, spanning five months from pitching to completing the final project. We pitched, revised, wrote, edited the script, organized location, found our actors, planned, shot, ate, shot, dragged equipment around, shot, edited, searched for sound effects, edited, and were finally able to export our final draft. I’ve always wanted to create a film in the family genre and am pleased how it captures the attention of all audience ages. Overall, I’m thankful for how I grew as I stretched myself to complete an intense and long project that I am proud of.

“Heard”

“Heard” was a rewarding film to shoot, it was shot quickly and I enjoyed production the most for this project because our all of our actors were Freestyle Academy students. I enjoyed taking a risk with attempting a dolly shot for the montage scene as well as improving our lighting. Overall, I feel that this project captures my skills as a film maker and I’m proud of how it turned out.
