I took a printmaking class in Oaxaca City, Mexico over the summer with a really great artist, and this picture above is what I made in the workshop. It’s not really the image itself that connects with the prompt of who inspires me, but more like the story behind it:

In Oaxaca City there is a large artist community, I think partially because artists are drawn to the issues of social justice, and also because of how much colonial and indigenous history the city and the state of Oaxaca has. I’m always really inspired by fellow artists that make art about these kinds of themes, they somehow tug at a string so deeply inside of me that connects to the rawest form of being human. I think I mean to say that they make me feel so much, this particular kind of political art brings out a kind of hopeful fire in me. I’m really glad I got to have a taste of printmaking, I want to find a way to keep learning it.
