My name is Sylvia Chen, a student of 2025 at Mountain View High School. I moved from China in 2021 and started my high school education in California with my dream of fashion and art. Art is a great part of my life. My journey in art started at the moment when I was able to hold a pen. In the past few years, I’ve been exploring all kinds of creative media. From traditional art to digital, and makeup styling to photography.
In my opinion, art is a language. Artists express their messages through visual methods. Paintings, photos, and stages, including fashion runways. They are just like the dialects of the same language. Art should be diverse.
What I want to do, is to combine the traditional beauty of art with the human body through fashion. To create my own language, that can express my ideas. Technology has become really essential to modern society, it involves new art expression. The Freestyle Academy provides me with such a great opportunity to study them. In this school year, I expect myself to gain more techniques that are helpful to my goal.
Welcome to my stage of creation.
Art reflection
This is an art reflection video of mine after visiting SFMOMA. I found Elke im Lehnstuhl by Georg Baselitz very interesting and decided to make this video about his work.
Georg Baseltz’s work “Elke im Lehnstuhl” evoked a strong emotion in me; the expressive brush strokes and a color combination dominated by sapphire and black turned the ordinary pigments into some forms of living energy. And it is covering me, conveying the indomitable resistance towards what seems to be a matter of course, like us, trying to take a stand in this wavering world.
