Introduction
In this unit, we learned about documentary production. This project challenged students to find a person who is significant to them in the community and interview them, it requires skills of communication, information collection, and time arrangement, to present the final product. The process started with English class reading and writing about other people’s documentary and profile works, getting a broad understanding of the unit. We used the skill of using portable to record our interview with the interviewee, and then turn them into words through Premiere Pro for further use. Once the writing is ready, students will work on their election class production based on the different guidelines. For me, in Design, we made a book about our documentary. The whole process of this project seems very long and challenging to students, but I am very proud to see my growth in doing things that I’ve never done before.

In Design class, we are required to make a book about what we wrote in English class. The project includes extra pieces of writing for the completeness of the book, designing Graphic Design Elements using Illustrator, taking photos of the person and editing them in Photoshop, and finally, using InDesign to arrange the layout of the book, making sure the readability and appearance of the book are satisfied.

This is the color pallet that I used for all my article production. I chose the following color to create a cognitive visual style and to fit with my profile person and topics.
Process



The process we experienced in Design seems very long and feels like NOT GOING TO END. But the final results turned out so satisfying, it just made me so proud of what I’ve done for this project. We learned so much about using InDesign and the rules of graphic design, especially how to align texts and images and more. Making Graphic Design Elements was a huge challenge for me at the beginning, I did not understand the concept very well nor how they would be used in my book. However, I eventually found a harmonious style that works well with my colors and context!

Interviewee Bios

Yunhua Fang is the first batch of college students after the Cultural Revolution. He was one of the 43 selected students out of 50,000 candidates in China in the late 20th century who entered the China Academy of Art, the most influential art school in China. He graduated in 1982 with a Ph.D, Yunhua Fang moved to Silicon Valley, with a heart full of hope and excitement teaching students of all ages different types of art in his studio. He now has over 40 years of teaching experience.
He is my art teacher outside of school who I’ve learned so much from, his educational idea inspired me to make this documentary project based on him, to discover more about art and creativity education.
Reflection
I am very thankful for an opportunity like this to experience different things that I’ve never tried before. Although the process of this long project was very hard, what I learned from it is truly a precious experience that made me grow. This book was originally a profile project but through the process of writing, I found my passion for the connection between art education and creativity, which has always been mentioned by Fang Laoshi, who is the interviewee and my art teacher. Therefore, I used this opportunity to express my perspective through this book and also to sort out my questions. English is not my first language but the language improvement brought by this project is significant. Even though this documentary project has been
very intense, I enjoyed the process. I hope you can also feel my passion while reading this book!
