Our goal was to capture an emotion through some else’s facial expressions. I decided to go to downtown Palo Alto to take some pictures since it is usually very busy in the evening. While taking pictures of a passerby, I overhead a man talking to a homeless woman with her child; he said “I see you every day when I leave from work, and I felt like I just have to talk to you” and continued to ask about her child and situation. I ended up taking a step back to be able to capture that moment of human kindness. I titled my photograph, “Compassion”.

“Compassion”

After the Citizen Diptych in Design, we created a Japanese Stab-binding Book. This book had three components: First, we did macro-photography of flowers and other plants. Second, we used Photoshop to create watercolor technique using brushes and different filters. Next, we ripped up the Japanese newspaper and dyed it with tea to make it looked age, then re-glued the mismatched pieces together to create a new piece of paper. On vellum paper, we printed quotes from our lyrical essays. On another piece of vellum paper, we wrote corresponding Kanjis that represented the feeling of the quote. Then we printed our water-color flowers on textured paper. Lastly, we drew traditional Japanese illustrations on the newspaper. We used rice paper in between each section. Lastly, after covering our book covers with decorative types of paper, we chose a traditional stab-binding pattern, drilled holes in our books, and bound the books. I chose the Noble Bind for my book.

ARVE error: Mode: lazyload not available (ARVE Pro not active?), switching to normal mode

Another project we did in Design was called the “Alphabet Project” where we had to go out and photograph things that resembled letters of the alphabet.
