Narrative 2

“How well can you apply advanced narrative techniques
to build a compelling story?”

The senior narrative was by far our most daunting project during our time at freestyle. Over the past several months (nearly half a year), we were challenged to utilize all of our communication/technological skills and concentrate our efforts in creating narrative structured stories. In English class, we structured the narrative project around worldbuilding; taking inspiration from Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Sower, we spent time curating our own sophisticated worlds from the ground up, including unique characters and internal conflicts. In our Digital Media class, we brought our ideas to life visually, using mediums such as Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, we designed digital artwork which captured the essence of the worlds we created. We then laser engraved our designs onto wood to form stacked 3D artwork. Out of all of the courses at freestyle, our film elective invested the most time into the senior narrative. Similarly to our work in junior year, we spent time writing our own unique and polished stories and then produced it into a short-film from start to finish. However, this time we charted into unexplored territories, and experimented with writing dialogue, which is its own beast in film production. Senior Narrative required much more attention to detail towards each of the three stages of production, and the magnitude of the project was larger than anything we’ve ever done in the class before. While narrative project, in its entirety, required more hard work than anything we’ve ever done in freestyle, the payoff was truly worth it, as we were able to create meaningful work that will outlast our time in this program.
