Narrator: It second semester of senior year in Mountain View High School and every one is done applying for colleges. So how are they going to pay for it? Most people start applying for scholarships. So what are scholarships meant to do?
SFX: cars passing.

Narrator:I went to the college and career certer and asked Ms.brock.

Ms. Brock: That depends on how is giving the money, scholarships have different purposes depending on the source of the money. Some scholarships are intended to help students go into certain careers, some are intended to encourage student to go to certain schools. Others are simply made to reward students for community service..... high academics.

Narrator: So what are the scholarships based on? I asked Mr.Kahl an Avid teacher in mountain view high school.

Mr. Kahl: They are merit based and need based scholarships.

Narrator4: This brought up a question in my mind. Is it ethical to have scholarships based on race?
Rel: There are two questions involved here and they are: which is ethical and that which is legal, ethically I don't think it's very ethical or moral for idiviuals to set up standers based upon race in a sositety where we discourage racism and institutionalize that discouragement... hyprical that
Narrator: I looked for some facts about the question.

Narrator: This chart show the amount of people that are graduating from college. 43.9 percent of Asian and Pacific Islanders 28.1 percent of non-Hispanic whites African-Americans and Hispanics had lower college graduation rates. Only 16.5 percent.

Narrator: this shows the percent of minorities that go to college. the percent of minorities has doubled in this graph which seems to be a good sign but it took 26 years and it only 30%

Narrator: As you can see that minorities do get priority in scholarships. So why would some one make a scholarship for minorities?

Mr. Kahl: Because they are concerned with the lack of equity in society ............
Narrator: So we have gained some facts about the subject and two opposing view points. But what does it fell like to be some one that is applying for a scholarship.

Narrator: What is it like to apply for a scholarship?
Fernanda: It is really stressful one though five I would give it a four point five........

Narrator: Why do you need a scholarship?
Fernanda: I need the money so I can go to college......

Fernanda: I write scholarships during the weekend.........
