Confinement
In my first picture, the young teenager is being emotionally beaten down by her mother. She enjoys drawing and making new things, but her mother is always discouraging her. Since her dad died when she was young, her mom was the only person she had left. She struggles with the insecurity of never being good enough and always wanting to strive for excellence. She remembers spending hours and hours on a drawing she loved and having her mom take one glance and laugh. She can still hear her mother yelling, “You can’t draw, just give up!” Because she always wanted her mother’s approval and trusted what she had to say, later in life it caught up with her.
As she is now a girl just out of college, she is facing the effects of her lonely and hard childhood. In this picture, you see a mound of crumpled up pieces of paper as to represent how she feels she can never do anything right. She just hears the voice of her mother in her head and can’t trust what she is doing is good. She wants to break free of her overbearing mother, but her mother’s thoughts have become her own internal monologue.
