In my narrative illustration I drew a nest in a tree, full of colorful eggs. I also drew a bland, white egg falling from the nest, getting lost in the darkness that is the black background. In the top right corner I drew a moon, and the moon is cradled by letters that spell out the word conform, while down by the white egg reads never conform.
In my illustration I used the three colorful eggs in the nest to represent a group of people with unique personalities. The leaves also represent people and give the feeling of a crowd, in order to provide a busy background for the three unique eggs. Then the tree and nest come into play to give you the sense that the eggs and leaves are supported, safe, and united. Now as your eye wanders down the page you see a fourth egg, however this egg is white and rather bland. This shows that this egg has little to no personality. By mixing the fact that this egg is a “clean slate” along with the fact that it is falling, I am able to convey the feeling that this egg is lost and doesn’t fit in. The last piece of this illustration that brings all of these feelings together is the black background. While you are looking at the three colorful eggs in the nest, you hardly notice the black background, because of the mass of leaves that fill up the area surrounding the nest. However, behind the falling egg there is only black, once again conveying the message that it is lost and doesn’t fit in, as it falls through this vast darkness. You also might notice the moon in the top right corner, which I have used to give the black background some depth, and intensifying the feeling of endless darkness.
