Enid: A Senior Black and White Mandala Design by Karla Oregon (2020)

Looking at the mandalas as a junior, I thought they were just random patterns that the seniors had created. Now that I´ve done it myself, I see how thoughtful they really are and how unique each mandala is. We created two different mandalas, one in color and one without. In the black and white one, I wanted to show my personality and my values so I titled it my middle name which is Enid. I added the letters of people’s first names who I feel like have taught me something in life. I added, K, E, and O. All of these people impacted my life quite a bit and shaped the person I am today so I felt like writing it there. I also added the phrase, “mente positiva” which means positive mind because it’s one of my favorite songs and it’s something I remind myself about whenever I’m feeling down. In the colored one, I tried making it like a summer vibe using colors like orange and blue. I started with purple first and moved towards blue, then orange to create a sunset type feel. I chose these colors because these past couple of summers have been truly amazing. I’ve done so much with friends and family that I think it’s only best to represent it in one of my mandalas.

Although they represented something different, I enjoyed creating both because they showed who I was. I’m a very shy and insecure person so I overthink my image a lot. I always find myself over analyzing the smallest details about me but while creating my mandala, as I was going through all the personality aspects of me, I realized that my physical appearance doesn’t matter. Who I am as a person matters way much more than what I look like and that’s something this project has taught me. Related website
