Edward's Snowflake: A Senior 3D Layered Art Project by Evan Segelke (2021)

I had some apprehensions about making an art piece about Edward Scissorhands but the truth is I have a genuine fondness for the film. Of the Tim Burton films I’ve seen, Edward Scissorhands is my favorite because of the compelling character and clever story. I really like the idea of the most gentle and kind man in the room having literal knife-hands. The film also has an excellent soundtrack from Danny Elfman. Elfman’s music is pretty consistently great in Burton’s films and always hits me in a special way.

I chose wood art for the multi-layer project because I like the beautiful imperfections of wood. I thought wood could help capture some of the stylish rough edges and asymmetry I tend to associate with Edward Scissorhands.

I think one reason the film resonates with me as much as it does is that at some level I empathize with Edward. I go through phases of being quite shy and awkward just like Edward Scissorhands throughout the film. He also seems out of place in most scenarios despite his harmless well-meaning nature which feels to me like a good metaphor for social anxiety. I’m also glad that I was able to incorporate some of my favorite details from the movie such as Edward’s scars. Related website
