Amsterdam: A Senior 3D Layered Art Project by Marie Godderis (2021)

For the Multi Layer Art Project, I chose to create a ring wood artwork inspired by the city of Amsterdam. The process began with sketching out an original design and developing the idea. My original intention was to create a stacked wood art project, but I ultimately switched to ring art, as it matched with my idea best. Using Adobe Illustrator, I created the five layers of my artwork with the pen tool. Once finished, the artwork was cut using the laser printer at Freestyle. I then assembled the artwork together, rearranging the wooden ring layers. During the project process, I was challenged with visualizing which aspects would be cut out, how the end product would look, and often found myself re-doing and adjusting parts of the artwork. Although difficult to conceptualize and visualize the project when working in Illustrator, it allowed me to improve my pen tool skills and turned out much better than expected.

Overall, I feel that I learned a lot from this project, in addition to the 3D video lessons using After Effects. I enjoyed how this project gave us the freedom to create a physical piece from a digital illustration. My favorite part of the artwork is the top-most layer with the three individuals: the boy walking his dog, the skateboarder, and the woman. Related website
