Flight: A Senior Black and White Mandala Design by Allison Teo (2021)

I would’ve liked to change my black and white mandala to have more variation in line thickness, as I created that piece with very little pressure sensitivity on my Illustrator brush. I feel like this could have given my mandala more visual interest, as well as placed emphasis on more important areas by utilizing the contrast of thick vs. thin lines.

I valued the process of creating the mandala design because it seemed fairly simple, but in practice, it was actually pretty complicated getting the concepts in my mind to fit well together on the canvas. The drawing part itself was very therapeutic to do and rewarding in the end, especially having seen the finished laser engraved product.

In my pieces, I wanted to convey the flow of different objects and make the different elements of my artwork fit together in a cohesive way. With the BW mandala, I achieved this through interlocking shapes like leaves and wings with curving lines. I learned that I prefer using larger, natural movements and going with the flow in my artwork over accurately creating lots of fine details, something that’s also a bit representative of my approach to real life situations.
