This project was very fun, as it was the kind of illustrative work I usually do but with a twist, which was a bit of a challenge in the beginning as I was trying to figure out how to create a design that would look good reflected and repeated within the mandala. Eventually I decided on the theme of yokai, from Japanese folklore, which helped me make my mandala cohesive.
This was a very fun and relaxing project, and I'll definitely use the templates I made in the future to create more mandalas. Even during this project, I had a lot of other ideas for mandalas I could make, so the possibilities are endless.
In regards to the overarching question of this unit, “who am I?”, I feel that this mandala revealed a lot. As opposed to abstract shapes and lines, I went for a more illustrative approach, as that is what I tend to work with. The subject I chose is also one that is reflective of my character, as it comes from the stories I'd hear as a child in Japan.
