Shattered Creations: A Junior Narrative Diptych by Devon Zuegel (2011)

In the first photo on the left, the young girl is creating a sandcastle by meticulously placing seashells parallel to the coastline. The shallow depth of field focused on her hand symbolizes her concentration that ranges on obsession while the rest of the world, slightly less in focus, swirls around her.

In the second photograph, I depicted a shattered wine glass to represent her loss of control as she grows older and her life becomes more complicated. Its much greater depth of field gives the viewer more perspective on just how powerful and overwhelming nature can be. The extreme contrast between the brilliant gleam on the pieces of glass and the ominous darkness surrounding them creates further conflict in the photograph.
