surpassed: A Junior Narrative Diptych by Katya Schaefer (2011)

In my images I depict a book on fire and a child on a rope ladder above an adult who is supposed to represent her mother. The idea behind these images is the lack of education. This is represented by the burning book where the book represents access to education and the education itself and the fire represents an insurmountable challenge. The second image shows a child above an adult which represents the point of no return. The point of no return in this situation is that a mother is helping her daughter with her homework but because she was not adequately educated in her child hood, her daughter has surpassed her mother academically. Thus, the daughter is above the adult.
