Slow and Steady Wins the Race: A Junior Self-Portrait Diptych by Michelle Chan (2011)

I Am. I am a hard worker and determined. I wonder what the future holds. I hear people around me telling me about the deadlines. I see the finish line. I want to succeed. I am a hard worker and determined. I pretend that what I'm doing now is a life or death situation. I feel pressure. I touch my head as its thoughts somersault. I worry that I won't be able to finish the task because of all the obstacles. I cry that I made the wrong choice. I am a hard worker and determined. I understand that you can learn from your mistakes. I say you can't let your failures define you. I dream that I will be successful. I try to be the best ME, I can be. I hope it happens someday. For this project, my value was perseverance and never giving up - no matter how long it takes youIn my essay I wrote about the struggles of studying and how much time goes into that. At times I feel like giving up, but when I succeed (getting a good grade) I feel so accomplishedIt's a great feeling! I portrayed this through juxtaposed photographs of snails - one on its way, and one reaching its goal. The first picture represents a snail on its way to successIt shows all of the challenges and obstacles a snail has to get through in order to reach its goal (in this case the tomato)If you look closely you can see bits of salt that I placed in its path which represents one of those obstacles. Furthermore, snails are quite slow and take a very long time to get places which proves my point that even if it takes them a long time, they will get there and succeed. The second picture is of a snail reaching victory. After a long time of ''sliming'' across the garden, it has finally reached its prize and is ready to savor the victory. Although it is only one tomato and a very small reward, every effort was worth it and its something that the snail can be proud of because it can now eatIt persevered and won.
