Burning Blue: A Junior Self-Portrait Illustration by Stephen Song (2011)

Many people know me as the person who is always calm, cool, and collected. In times of worry and hardship, I'm the only one that can be seen taking it easy while the others panic in an euphoric hysteria. The reason that I am this way is simple; I often do not care about things. Although in my mind I know what is important and what is mandatory, I often prefer to disregard my priorities. When I appear calm and steady, it is actually the result being apathetic towards something. Without considering the consequences, I often let things go because I may feel that it is not worth the effort to pursue something. My illustration entitled ''Burning Blue'' is a drawing of an astronaut burning into the atmosphere, in a free-falling position. In a time of crisis like this, one may be worried about death or the destruction of worldly materials. But this particular astronaut does not care at all. Instead of panicking, my astronaut looks upon his inevitable fate with apathy, by letting himself fall without attempting to escape his fiery peril. This represents my lack of attention towards anything remotely important, since I mostly ignore things until it is too late. I realized that it is important to know how to spend your energy and time caring about the important things, while ignoring the things that do not matter at all.
