Inferiority: A Junior Self-Portrait Illustration by Daniel Kammerer (2012)

In my illustration, I depicted a bag of potato chips at the end of a line of potatoes to show that I’m afraid of failure and not meeting expectations. The bag of chips and three potatoes represent me as a product of a society where everyday life is made as fast, convenient, and easy as possible. In the past, people had to toil endlessly just to feed themselves and their families, like a potato farmer. Potatoes are the product of hard work and commitment. A bag of chips is the result of convenience and frivolity. I’m afraid that because I’ve become so accustomed to the ‘shortcuts’ offered by living in the 21st century that I won’t have as good of a work ethic as those who lived long before me.

The picture was made with Adobe Illustrator CS6. It’s a vector based program; which means that it uses geometry and math to maintain sharpness of lines and shapes, no matter what size the image is. I created the illustration by selecting out three different potatoes from a single photograph and line them up with a bag of chips at the back. I then used the pen tool in illustrator to make smooth curves and trace over the real photographs. The paths made by the pen tool are automatically filled with the correct color, in this case either yellow or tan for the potato or bag of chips. After getting the basic outline correct, I used the brush tool to add details and other minor lines and shading. This project got me more familiar with Illustrator and its differences from Photoshop.
