Space Monkey: A Junior Self-Portrait Illustration by Juan Nava (2012)

Space Monkey is the name of the brain in the center. To the left is a crescent Sun which represents a positive internal trait, optimism. The sun is used a lot to represent happiness, so I used it for optimism, and like how my optimism is, I made the sun in the shape of a crescent moon to show day and night. On the Opposite side, a mouth with fangs hangs dauntingly close to the brain to represent a negative external force, criticism. I used fangs because they remind me of Dracula, a creature that sucks the life out of you, and also because they're tough to get out once inside you like somebody's criticism of you.

The most prominent design elements are color, emphasis, and balance. The brain is supposed to have bright, contrasting colors to emphasize the struggle internally and externally. The fangs are emphasized with a black outlining while the light rays draw attention to the sun. Balance is key with this assignment because the internal and external forces should have an obvious conflict, therfore the positive internal force is on the left while the negative external force is on the right. The main subject, Space Monkey the Brain, is between the two opposing forces. When creating this project i used the program's layers alot so I had strong solid shapes from traces. The traced images also envoked other ideas for the Illustration, so although my preferance isn't Illustrator, I can still use the program to my advantage.
