Uncertainty: A Junior Narrative Diptych by Ean Pollock (2013)

In my diptych, I am trying to represent a story of an abusive freeloader left by his underappreciated and overworked girlfriend, all in two pictures. The first picture is of the freeloader, Brock Carson, sitting lazily on the couch in front of the television with a mess on the table in front of him. Out of focus and in the background is Quinn Gutierrez, with a disappointed and regretful pose, standing in the doorway. I feel that this picture evokes emotion and conveys the ideas I was attempting to create. Brock is metaphorically, and physically in this picture, a waste of space. The sharp lines and high contrast along the outline of his body leave something to be desired in this picture, which is manifested in the second picture. This photograph, with higher contrast and saturation, gives closure to the story portrayed by the first. The focus is not on Quinn, but on the brick wall just outside the door, highlighting the uncertainty of the decision she has just made. The two of them are positioned on opposite sides of the diptych to represent the emotional distance that has formed between them. Overall, I am satisfied with the finished product and feel that it is successful.
