Overcoming Loneliness: A Junior Narrative Diptych by Sanjana Pandit (2013)

In Design class, we were told to tell a story involving an internal and external conflict through a photo diptych, each side representing two conflicts. I based this diptych off of my flash fiction piece, which was about a boy named Charlie who struggles to fit in with the rest of the kids, but finds an outlet by writing in his journal everyday at school. Another main character, Annabelle also has a tough time fitting in and she too wants someone who she can trust. One day, a group of bullies approach Charlie. As they are teasing him about being lame because he writes in his journal, Annabelle is witnessing the whole scene. The bullies snatch the journal out of Charlie's hand and throw it on the ground. The photo on the left in my diptych portrays this scenario: a journal that has been harshly thrown on the ground and a boy in the background running away because he has been humiliated. This represents how Charlie allows others to play with his emotions and how he can't stand up for himself. Later in the story, Annabelle picks up the journal and decides to read parts of it. She connects with Charlie on an emotional level, and falls in love with his kind soul. At the end, Annabelle gives Charlie his journal back and gives him a kiss on the cheek. Likewise, in my second photo, a girl is giving the boy his journal back illuminating the starting of a great friendship and how two people can easily connect with each other. Both characters had an internal feeling of loneliness, but overcame it by meeting each other and creating a strong friendship. My biggest challenge in creating this piece was composition because I was unsure how each picture would look next to each other. I used a lot of depth of field in both photos to tell the story more successfully.
