Untitled: A Junior Self-Portrait Illustration by Jillian Burns (2013)

The illustration is a project based off a theme expressed in my personal essay. The theme I chose is that of holding onto good memories during dark times.

The dark times are represented by the muted colors and the deep purple background, as well as the sharp lines of the blackness in the upper right corner. This shows how the darkness is trying to take over. The happy memories are represented by the ball of light she’s holding. It glows onto her face, keeping away the shadows which would otherwise be there. Despite the solemn blues of her skin and dress, the light shines brightly on her face.
